This is What I Was Born to Do

This was Joni’s first experience of sheep herding. The owner of the sheep, Paula, kindly offered to introduce Joni to her flock and give her a first taste of this wonderful work. Joni was so excited when she realized what she was there for, but it was just wonderful to see the way she instinctively ran round them and kept them together. I was really impressed when she spotted this sheep who was moving away from the flock and she came out to bring her back. What can I say? She was born and bred to it. She has a long way to go before she has the knowledge and skills that really make a good herding dog. But Paula was really pleased with her potential. And I felt like a proud parent on the first day of school.

I suppose you would probably like to see a photo of the bath that followed? I will post that too, but in the meantime, don’t be bothered by the mud. She wasn’t.

Look East

We were near the end of a road trip, after driving through some heavy rains interspersed with dramatic bursts of light through the clouds.

As the sun began to set the sky was aflame with colour and drama. The intensity of the sunset was almost overwhelming and Steven stopped the car for me to dash out to the side of the road, dodging rain drops to try to find a decent foreground for some photographs. I took a few and then I looked behind, to the East. The pastoral scene, with the last of the autumn leaves at the bottom of a green stretch of grass and bounded by a field of ripened gold corn was a beautiful foreground to the more muted, but still beautiful reflection of the garish colours in the West.

I am in the mood for a more tasteful, gentle palette tonight and so am sharing the Eastern sky view. It also fits the +Farm Friday #farmfriday theme, curated by myself, +Steven Kennard, +Susanne Stelle and +Alessia De Bonis. Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

This was taken on the same evening which, not long before produced this scene: https://plus.google.com/105804664540125819976/posts/cn1PfKbaXnq .

Late Afternoon Light, September, Annapolis Valley, NS

There are moments when the light is special in that 'Golden Hour' before sunset or after sunrise and it filters down between the clouds in a darkening, heavy sky. At times you see this light and you can't do anything about it. Perhaps you don't have your camera, or there is just no scenery to feature. Or maybe you are in heavy traffic and can't get out without creating a hazard.

On this day, I was coming home and saw these golden and darkening conditions developing in the distance. I drove past my favourite farm, but the light wasn't going to hit it. I kept driving and watching. As I came down towards Hillaton, I saw the clouds becoming heavier over the North Mountain and the mist settling on the hills beneath, all the time I was driving and watching for the scene that would be the one.

When I saw this, I pulled the car quickly around the corner onto the hard shoulder (light shifts rapidly in this situation, I didn't want to lose it) and, grabbing the camera I jumped out of the car, all the time clicking the shutter at the scene, just in case the light changed and I lost it.

Soon these trees will be turning wonderful colours of red and gold, but now the fields are gold with harvest, surrounded by the deep greens.

Working Horses for Farm Friday!

This pair of draught horses was in a field not far from where we live. The older one was quite protective of the younger so they both came over to see what I was up to. Not many people use horses for working the land any more, but they do a great job of pulling timber out of woods that are inaccessible to vehicles in winter. They are light on the land compared to tractors, non polluting, quiet, willing and companionable and can help produce their own food. It is too bad they are not a common sight except at farm fairs.

Remember that tomorrow is the day for one of our favourite themes, #farmfriday+Farm Friday curated by myself, +Steven Kennard , +Susanne Stelle and +Alessia De Bonis (we are an international team, so we can view your farming images almost around the clock!). Don't forget to post your farm themed photographs – animals, landscapes, buildings, equipment etc. We are all looking forward to seeing them.
