Joni and the Wubba

We have wonderful, kind and loving friends – Katheryn and Norma – who also love dogs. Katheryn had told me how much her dog loved his ‘Wubba’. A week or so ago they turned up to meet Joni with a big bag full of toys and treats for her (and a bunch of flowers for me). They apologized that the toys did not include a Wubba, as they had not managed to find one. It didn’t matter to Joni, who knew nothing about it and who loved all the toys in the bag and loved Katheryn and Norma, of course (what puppy wouldn’t appreciate friends who turn up with bags of gifts and make a big fuss of you?).

Only a few days later, there was a knock on the door. When I opened it, there was Katheryn, with a brand new Wubba for Joni. It has become one of her most favourite toys. I have been trying to get a photograph of her playing with it, so that they could see what a success it was, but it has not been easy. It’s a toy that has to be shaken and thrown about, not the easiest thing to catch on a still photograph. Yesterday, as Joni paused for breath, I did finally catch that moment.  #AdayinthelifeofJoni  #puppy

Puppy Play at Joni's Blue Ball Play Station – 71/365

Today I discovered that a jet from a spray bottle is a good reminder to Joni to stop doing naughty things. It doesn't hurt her but gets the message across quickly and effectively. I mean such naughty things as jumping up on my chair when I am eating or when I'm trying to use the laptop on the table. As my chair is also her blue ball station, we have come to a compromise where I can sit on it and she can play with her toys, including her blue ball underneath it. There is room for both of us. Here she is just having fun with Steven in between playing the blue ball game.

It's Here! By Popular Demand – an Album Dedicated to Joni

We have so many  #fansofjoni  that it is taking up much of our time in answering fan mail and helping her sign autographed pictures to send out. So here is a feast of Joni pictures for your weekend delight!

Joni and the Beaver

Joni had lost her blue ball. She was feeling pretty miserable as this was her absolute favourite toy and no other ball was the same. The new beaver toy with three satisfying squeakers in it consoled her for a little while. She had been told that she was not allowed to play on the chair. But she was pretty sure she would get away with it by putting on her cutest look and bringing the beaver up to cuddle. The happy ending to the story is that her blue ball was found under the furniture, so life for us all could go back to normal.

The rest of the photographs of Joni in this album have been published previously but are a great record from the first day she arrived home with us. I have more unseen photographs to add to the album over the days to come. Enjoy the new Joni album!

Joni About to Launch Her Blue Ball – 64/365

Everyone who has been following the progress of our puppy Joni will know that her favourite toy is her blue ball. She prefers to throw the ball to us from the 'blue ball station' which is under my chair. As you can see, she picks it up, holds it above the rail and uses the rail to bounce the ball in the direction of the person she wants to throw it or roll it, or kick it back to her.

In her tiny puppy days, when she was running after her frisbee or the blue ball, for some reason she felt she had to jump over the chair rails on her way through. She can't do that now, sadly for her. One of the disadvantages of growing up.

This is her first object of real border collie intensity. She will lie in her station for ages and watch the ball where it happens to be on the kitchen floor and never take her eyes off it, waiting for it to move.

If I am busy working in the kitchen, at the sink or the counter preparing food, she'll bring the ball and position it between my feet so that, should I have a spare moment in my work, I will be able to instantly kick it in her direction. And yes, that does happen. 🙂 Yesterday she threw the ball at Rupert (our cat) who was sitting on the kitchen floor. When Rupert didn't seem to 'get it', she took the ball over to him, dropped it at his feet and ran back to her station under the chair, waiting for him to kick it back. I did my best by trying to take his paw to hit it back, but I think he needs some more time to get the point of this game.
