Milkweed Pod: Monarch Central

5 of 5 for #naturephotochallenge

Every time I look at this picture I think of that line from the Beatles' song "She's leaving home, bye bye'. The tightly packed cluster of milkweed seeds are opening up, ripe and ready to take to the air and disperse on the wind. The milkweed is a plant that is vital for the survival of the Monarch butterfly and so each of these beautiful bits of airy fluff carries a precious burden. The contrast in textures between the seeds and their wings is striking.

This photo was taken last autumn in Ontario after a light snow fall. Snow has taken on a whole different meaning since that time.

I have been challenged by my friend +Tom Crews to participate in a 5-day Nature Challenge. I have been asked to post one nature photo each day for 5 days. I am asked to name a new challenger on each of my 5 days. Today I am challenging my friend +Linda Jess to join me in this. Just post one nature photo a day for 5 days. Tag me in it, copy this text and use the hash tag #naturephotochallenge and nominate someone else on each of the days.

Thanks for nominating me Tom. It's been fun, if I have been a bit slow at finishing. 😀

Frozen Man Discovered in Nova Scotia Snow Bank

What kind of wife is it… who, having seen her husband coming up the path after being out for hours in his tractor in a blizzard gets the camera all set up so that when he comes in, she can grab a picture to show you all? Don't answer that question, please.

It wasn't funny at all, I realized as soon as I had clicked the shutter (I only got one photograph and before you ask , no, I did not say " smile honey! "

He had been clearing the drive as you possibly saw in the video I posted the other day, linked below if you missed it. He couldn't stop shaking and I was seriously worried that he had gone into some kind of shock. His feet were so cold he couldn't put them into the bath I drew for him without being in extreme pain, until he had let them thaw out for almost 20 minutes. I did make him a cup of tea, so I am not entirely self-serving, I hope you understand.

So you see it's not all fun and games in a Nova Scotia winter! (https://plus.google.com/u/0/105804664540125819976/posts/4jDsYTXmb7b)

Sculptural Exhibition #1

#naturechallenge

Over a few days I have been attending a most wonderful sculptural exhibition in my own back yard. The sculptor is the most creative imaginative artist ever known! I wandered through the display alone, no distracting crowds to get in my way. But I couldn't help feeling that it was a shame that most people missed it on that day as it was truly breathtaking and, as it is a constantly evolving exhibition, today it looks completely different again. The joys of Canadian winter weather that can turn a field into a moonscape or fabulous mountain range overnight!

Winter Sunset Over Peil's Farm

It's freezing and everything seems to be covered in white. Did I say that it's very cold? But at a moment like this, with the glow of the setting sun, the cold no longer has the same bite. The birds are flying to roost and somehow it's all bearable. Spring will surely come.
