You Didn't Believe That Joni Runs on Top of the Snow? – 52/365

I hadn’t intended to take a photograph of Joni and post it as my daily photo for my project. But the day raced away from me, fraught with problems and hassle and stress and in the end the only pictures I had managed to take were ones of Joni running across the top of the snow first thing this morning. A project is a project and so I am posting this. Besides, it ties in with yesterday’s photos of snow.

Yes, this is exactly the same snow as I stood in yesterday, sinking in up to above my knees. It’s probably 3 feet or more deep. But gradually it forms a fairly hard crust on the top and a 15 lb puppy can easily run on the surface. Not so a person, who sinks in and flounders about,, breaking through the top and losing balance on the lumpy hard layers of ice and snow beneath. I was not having nearly as much fun as she was. The next times I went out with her today (without the camera) I strapped on my snowshoes and I, too, was walking across the top of the snow!

Joni is 12 weeks old tomorrow. Have a great weekend everyone! I hope you have as much fun as a puppy running across the snow on a lovely winter’s day.

Joni in the New Snow – 50/365

Sometimes our weather seems to come out of nowhere. I think we were supposed to get flurries in the night. Flurries, for the uninitiated means  "a very light snow that is rather brief and does not produce a measurable amount of snow (minimum of a tenth of an inch)".

Instead, this morning I woke up to a fresh fall of snow of 6-8" or around 20 cm. Steven was a little dismayed as that meant he had to spend the first 2.5 hours of his morning clearing it from the drive. Joni was delighted. She can still walk on top of the last fall which formed a crust and again finds it easier going under the trees where it is less deep. I am a lot heavier (!) and so I sink right in, well above my boots and even above my knees in the open areas. For the #fansofjoni  we have another Joni feature today! 😀

Steven and Joni – 47/365

I took lots of photographs of different scenes on Sunday, which was a very snowy day, but in the end this one is one that I liked best. Joni is not easy to keep still these days, so family portrait times are limited. Just Steven and his dog, having a playtime break. It made a pleasant change from Steven having to be out in the cold, the snow and the wind, clearing the drive. Joni didn't mind being out in the cold, the snow and the wind. But of course everything is play for her at the moment.

Joni plays with the blue ball in a different way with Steven from how she does with me. For him she will actually run in a low, border collie stalking run after the ball when he throws it across the kitchen, bouncing it off a chair (!).  After picking it up in her mouth and running past him a few times , tantalizing him with it, she drops it between his feet as he sits there on the edge of the hearth. Yesterday she tried throwing it at him as she does with me, but in the end decided that this wasn't going to work the same way with him and reverted to more 'normal' behaviour.

Border Collies Are Intense 46/365

Even as pups, they soon become very intense about everything in life. As I write this, Joni is busy finishing off a piece of raw broccoli stem that has kept her attention for 10 minutes. As soon as she finishes with that, she will need to have another diversion. Her blue ball is always a favourite. Most dogs want a ball to be thrown for them to run after. Not Joni. We live in an older house with a very uneven floor, so any ball rolled along it will move here and there for a long time, with no further interference from dog or man. So Joni just nudges the ball and watches where it goes. She lies, under this chair, as though she is in goal. As soon as the ball gets within what she considers her area, she lunges for it to catch it.

Here she is asking me to throw it for her, as I sit on the floor with my camera. But she wants me to throw it not for her, but at her. So she will shortly nudge it with her nose so that it rolls away from her until I can reach it, when I am expected to kick it back. If I can kick it right into her mouth, she is really pleased. I am not usually that good an aim and feel that I am a disappointment to her, in that area at least.

Joni was 11 weeks old on Saturday. She has lived with us for 4 weeks, it's hard to believe.

I'm a little tired, so will get up to date with my project as I can.
