Autumn Sadness Tempered by Light

It's true that although the fall is one of my favourite seasons (and definitely the best time to visit Eastern Canada) it always brings a mixture of moods. The sadness in the mix is related to the end of summer, which this year seemed was shorter than normal and not nearly as hot as it usually is. I feel that I didn't do half of what I planned or hoped to do. 'Ah well, there's always next summer' but that thought comes with a little sigh of resignation.

The fall also brings a feeling of restlessness as I am nagged by a persistent feeling that I should be leaving to go somewhere. There is also a slight mood of foreboding about what the winter might have in store for us and this hangs heavy as the stormy dark sky behind these bright leaves.

But in spite of all of that, the brilliant autumn light, magnified and intensified by the golden, orange and red colours leaves a feeling of joy that no other season seems to carry.

North Mountain, Nova Scotia, Colours Beginning to Change

This time last year we went for a drive towards Blomidon to see the early fall leaves. This scene I loved for the contrasting colours of the crop of blue (cabbages, I suspect) in the middle ground. The "North Mountain" is, in fact, a part of the Appalachian chain of mountains that stretches down into the North Eastern US. It hardly qualifies for the term 'mountain' (I can hear laughter from those who are familiar with really high mountain ranges, such as the Rockies, Himalayas, Alps etc.) as it is barely more than a line of high hills. But these deserve a little respect as it seems that the mountains are very old and therefore worn down.

The leaves are becoming really spectacular here and I hope I get a bit of nice weather to go out to see the colours this year.

Early Morning, Late Summer

Summer has ripened and is ready to move into fall. We now have foggy, chilly (sometimes frosty) mornings with the sun rising later every day. It can seem a sad time, as we love our summer pleasures, of hot days, long, warm evenings, beautiful flowers, birds and insects all around us. But this 'shoulder' season has a beauty too. The late sunrise means that I am close to being able to see it again (not an early riser any longer), and that for now I get to see the rays of morning light pouring over the trees into the back field, highlighting the tussocks of late summer vegetation.

Coastal Scene, Maine : I Would Have Settled Here

Along the same stretch of coast as the Pemaquid Point lighthouse I posted the other day, there is a historic settlement, visible only in the ruins that have been partially excavated. After we walked around the grassy stone strewn hollows, which were the location of the old buildings, roped off and explained by signs, we were trying to imagine what life must have been like in the 1700's. I walked over towards the water and gazed over this scene. Without that picturesque building on stilts, the scene would have been perhaps not too different to what met the eyes of the early settlers. The mist was settling over the distant hills across the bay as the shadows lengthened. I would have been tempted to settle there myself.
