A Dream of Country Sunsets

Dream of a country sunset - multiple exposure - Ellie Kennard 2016
Dream of a country sunset – multiple exposure – Ellie Kennard 2016

A path that runs along the side of a field that’s near our house has always given the best view of sunsets within a 5 minute walk. As we have so many trees around us and the ground rises in the direction of the setting sun, the most glorious bursts of colour in the evenings can go completely unnoticed if we don’t make a special effort to get to this clearing. Yesterday night I saw the reflections in the clouds in the east and practically ran out with Joni, camera (and blue ball) in hand, hoping I was not too late. The display was almost over when I got there, but the landscape has changed since my last sunset visit there. For the first time in 19 years the farmer has planted corn in that field that has lain fallow for so long. The ripening crop stands about 3 feet taller than my head, with the path on a much lower level. The foliage makes an interesting silhouette in the foreground, but the (in camera) multiple exposure gives such a dreamy feel that I decided to share this. Dreams of country sunsets.

Town Sunset from all Angles

Don’t you hate it when there is a gorgeous sunset you can see happening, but the foreground just is not going to give you a great photo of it? On this particular occasion, the sky was beautiful, but I was right on a residential street in the busy town of Uxbridge in Ontario. I decided to take multiple shots of this from many different angles and blend them, hoping to get rid of as much of the distraction as I could and just have the ‘focus’ be on the light through the trees. When one of my friend’s neighbours saw me trying to get a better angle on the sunset, he even invited me into his backyard to see if it was better from there. Aren’t people great?

Have a great end to your week, everyone!

Just When You Thought it Was Over

Life and Nova Scotia weather have a way of surprising and delighting you. Yesterday the snow had entirely melted leaving behind only the dull brown of mud and winter grasses. It was really too early for Spring promise and the world seemed to have been caught in a state of embarrassing unwashed undress. Then, as though she had coyly pulled her fluffy white eiderdown over her, this morning she looked all resplendent once again, her nakedness buried in a modest covering of white.

Yes, the Spring will come, with the green pushing through to quickly cover the mud and dead grasses. Just not yet.

Evening Light on Quebec Village Spire

Why does it seem that the best sunsets are always seen in your rear view mirror? In some cases, a particularly lovely scene will go flashing by when you are on the highway with no way to stop safely. I was a passenger travelling from Quebec city on the way home in November, 2014 when I saw the setting sun casting a beautiful glow on the tops of the autumn trees in this village off to the side of the highway. My camera is usually in my lap when I travel anywhere, so I caught this with the beautiful golden light on that spire.

Bending, not Breaking

Some photographs really need no words of explanation.

(But for those who want a bit more): This was another snowy walk on a Sunday afternoon and with the new heavy fall of snow and the bending trees, the light called us along that path and through into the woods. These special times are fleeting and for this reason we treasure them and think of them as a typical winter scene. In reality, these scenes happen very rarely as usually the wind blows it all off the trees as it falls. Now, the snow is almost all gone. So I'm so glad I caught this.

Early Morning, Late Summer

Summer has ripened and is ready to move into fall. We now have foggy, chilly (sometimes frosty) mornings with the sun rising later every day. It can seem a sad time, as we love our summer pleasures, of hot days, long, warm evenings, beautiful flowers, birds and insects all around us. But this 'shoulder' season has a beauty too. The late sunrise means that I am close to being able to see it again (not an early riser any longer), and that for now I get to see the rays of morning light pouring over the trees into the back field, highlighting the tussocks of late summer vegetation.

Have a beautiful day everyone!

Sophia

Sophia is like a flower. She brightens up the room just as flowers do, by her very presence. She is full of light and love and joy with her direct, trusting gaze and that little smile that played around her rosebud mouth when she looked up at her beloved Dadda.

We met Sophia only yesterday and she touched our hearts. What a sweetheart.

Full Moon Kitchen Window – 73/365

I saw this in my kitchen window last night and thought the reflected lights, the (almost) full moon, the tired looking but bright coloured flowers and the dark blue sky made for a great composition. No story, I just loved it and hope you do too.

Have a great weekend everyone and I hope the weather is being kind to all.

Playing with capturing city lights from a moving car. It looks to me like worlds or planets, love the intersecting circles.
