"I Think I'm Going to be Sick" – 56/365

Today was the day that Joni got her next set of vaccines, so she had to travel in the car to the vet's, a thirty minute drive on twisty, bumpy country roads. You could tell she was feeling a little queasy from carsickness during the trip there, as she started to look like this… We made it to the vet's without incident, at least. She was relaxed and calm at the appointment, a real model pup. However the journey home was the undoing of her and she threw up. Fortunately I was prepared for it. Once again, I took lots of other photographs today, but this one was the one that I think topped the lot for cuteness factor. We can all do with some awwww every day.

Valentine Had a Job to do Today – for Joni – 55/365

Valentine had a story that started badly. She was bred to be a fighting dog, as she was a bull mastiff cross breed. As a puppy she had duct tape put around her muzzle so they could do horrible things to her, to make her mean in a fighting environment. She suffered cruelty and hardship. But Valentine's story has ended well. She was rescued and lives in a loving and caring environment. She never did become mean, but is a really gentle softie. She is a dog who works, but her work is one of a more positive nature. She works for the Invisible Fence company, as part of the training they offer.

She came to our house today to do a job. It was Joni's final day of training. She had to be tested by having a strange dog walk just outside of her boundaries, to see if she would try to break through them. Valentine was the dog for the job. They met up and Joni (just in the background in this picture) fell in love with Valentine. They played and ran around together. But then Valentine was led outside of the boundary. And Joni did not try to follow. She passed her test with flying colours. So this lovely dog, rescued from what would have been a life of fear and aggression and misery now has a happy life, with a family who love her and enjoy her company. And she meets lots of new dogs, doing her job perfectly with her lovely calm nature.

And now that Joni passed her test, she is free to run around her property as she likes, with no fear of going near the road, nor of straying onto a farmer's land, or into the woods where there might be hunters. Valentine went home with her owner. Another job well done.

You Didn't Believe That Joni Runs on Top of the Snow? – 52/365

I hadn’t intended to take a photograph of Joni and post it as my daily photo for my project. But the day raced away from me, fraught with problems and hassle and stress and in the end the only pictures I had managed to take were ones of Joni running across the top of the snow first thing this morning. A project is a project and so I am posting this. Besides, it ties in with yesterday’s photos of snow.

Yes, this is exactly the same snow as I stood in yesterday, sinking in up to above my knees. It’s probably 3 feet or more deep. But gradually it forms a fairly hard crust on the top and a 15 lb puppy can easily run on the surface. Not so a person, who sinks in and flounders about,, breaking through the top and losing balance on the lumpy hard layers of ice and snow beneath. I was not having nearly as much fun as she was. The next times I went out with her today (without the camera) I strapped on my snowshoes and I, too, was walking across the top of the snow!

Joni is 12 weeks old tomorrow. Have a great weekend everyone! I hope you have as much fun as a puppy running across the snow on a lovely winter’s day.

Joni in the New Snow – 50/365

Sometimes our weather seems to come out of nowhere. I think we were supposed to get flurries in the night. Flurries, for the uninitiated means  "a very light snow that is rather brief and does not produce a measurable amount of snow (minimum of a tenth of an inch)".

Instead, this morning I woke up to a fresh fall of snow of 6-8" or around 20 cm. Steven was a little dismayed as that meant he had to spend the first 2.5 hours of his morning clearing it from the drive. Joni was delighted. She can still walk on top of the last fall which formed a crust and again finds it easier going under the trees where it is less deep. I am a lot heavier (!) and so I sink right in, well above my boots and even above my knees in the open areas. For the #fansofjoni  we have another Joni feature today! 😀
