Project 366

A project I undertook in 2012 to share one photograph I took each day of that leap year. The subjects are diverse and show the development of my own photographic skills as I learned how to use my camera and compose photographs as I wanted them to be seen and enjoyed.

Pileated Woodpecker – 74/365

I don't have a long enough lens to get wonderful bird images, but when I had not one, but two pileated woodpeckers around my feeders the other day, I had to get a picture, at least of one of them. Taken through the window, this shows one eyeing the feeder hanging above it. They are the largest woodpecker we have around here and make an impressive noise when they drum on the trees around us. We don't see them very often, but you can always tell when they have found a meal in our trees as they leave huge jagged holes as evidence of where they have been.

Ladies' Home Journal 1917 – 73/365

It's wonderful, the things you can find buried in the walls of old houses. This copy of the Ladies' Home Journal is dated 1917. Although much of it has been chewed by mice (or maybe squirrels) there are some pages that are more or less intact. The colour and print is clear and bright, which is amazing for a magazine printed on newsprint quality paper, which is almost 100 years old. It will be great to take the pages that are almost intact and frame them. What a history these old relics hold. The times these houses have seen. If only they could talk. And I guess they do, in their own way.

You Missed a Bit – 72/365

I guess I don't get out very much, as many of my photos are taken indoors and of my animals! So now those of you who have been following the progress of Joni (of the blue ball fame) will see that she is friends with Rupert. It's always handy to have a buddy who tells you when you haven't cleaned your face properly. Joni gets a bit over enthusiastic at times when playing with Joni, but on the whole it is working out well.

Safe Haven – 71/365

In the midst of extreme building makeovers and with a young puppy on the ground level, it's important for a cat to have a safe haven. The top of the fridge is the best place from which to keep an eye on the proceedings, direct operations, referee games of Blue Ball and pull faces at Joni. So this is where Rupert sits.
