Project 366

A project I undertook in 2012 to share one photograph I took each day of that leap year. The subjects are diverse and show the development of my own photographic skills as I learned how to use my camera and compose photographs as I wanted them to be seen and enjoyed.

Empty Case – 32/365

I didn't even know that this tree was in our garden! It seems to be some kind of a nut tree, with these empty cases covered in these lovely twisty tendrils, remaining on the tree. If someone who knows the tree can enlighten me as to what it is, I will update the post with the information. The empty cases had such a wonderful structure with these curly tendrils and the furry case cover that I really wanted to show you all. I had seen it while walking Joni around in the snow and made a mental note to come back minus dog but plus camera, at a time when the weak sun might just about hit it. I had a little wait when I got back, but the light did get to it and here it is.

Sharp and Clear and Soft and Fuzzy – 31/365

Some things in life are sharp and clear. Some things are soft and fuzzy. When I was a child and had a fever, the fever dream I had was of having a soft, velvety pillow to lie my head on, which, as soon as I relaxed onto it became hard and spiky. I still remember that dream and can feel the horrible shock of it.

Soft and gentle can be good and can help relax and heal. But sometimes soft and fuzzy can obscure the sharp and clear. As long as we can see them for what they are, there is room for both in our worlds.

The first month of of 2014 is over in my 365 project. 11 more months to go. When I started this project I had no idea that I would have a young and bouncy puppy to cheer me, to play with and to take on my walks. So the year is off to an excellent start.

This is not a macro, but I know how much my friend +Robin Griggs Wood loves feathers. I also want to thank her for her kind and generous spirit. So, although not a macro, I am mentioning  #MacroFeatherFriday by +Robin Griggs Wood +E.E. Giorgi

Antique Carved Box with Farming Theme – 29/365

This lovely little box (just a little bigger than 1" in diameter) is intricately carved with an oriental scene depicting an agricultural theme. Tomorrow is #farmfriday  and so I can safely post it for that theme, to remind everyone to post their images tomorrow! The curators are always looking forward to seeing your farming related images from around the world. This is an antique box. It was made long before there was an awareness of the threat to the species, at a time when piano keys were made from ivory. It is not meant to glorify the use of ivory, simply as a record of a piece of craft from a byegone era.

Last night I spent quite a bit of time working with the external flash. I bounced the light off a home made reflector (a big piece of thick white paper) and used the Fong diffuser to spread the light. I was not able to use auto focus as the light was so low, so used my app on my tablet to gauge the manual focus and to fire the shutter. The app (which is a live view) drains the battery super fast, so I was just beginning to enjoy myself when it all went dead (flash and camera batteries).  But it's all about learning.
