Project 366

A project I undertook in 2012 to share one photograph I took each day of that leap year. The subjects are diverse and show the development of my own photographic skills as I learned how to use my camera and compose photographs as I wanted them to be seen and enjoyed.

The Animal That Makes me Shudder with Fear

I think it stems from seeing a movie "Eight Below" about some dogs that were left behind in Antarctica. One of the dogs is at the edge of the ice and this huge face full of nasty teeth (accompanied by terrifying music, I'm sure) lunges out of the water at the dog. It was a leopard seal. (I don't remember whether the dog escapes or not.) The fear and shock of that moment has made me for the first time in my life actually dislike an animal. BUT this video has put the voice of reason and some perspective back into my view of leopard seals. It's not long, well worth watching.

I have a confession to make: when Joni starts to get overtired and a bit out of control, like a very tired child, she seems to become a lunging head full of teeth going for shoe laces, jeans or whatever is in reach. At those moments we call her 'Leppy' (short for leopard seal) and ask her nicely to go to her bed for a rest. I feel a lot better about that name now. She answers to Leppy almost as well as Joni. 🙂

Thanks to Steve who applied this leopard seal therapy session by sending me this link.

Joni About to Launch Her Blue Ball – 64/365

Everyone who has been following the progress of our puppy Joni will know that her favourite toy is her blue ball. She prefers to throw the ball to us from the 'blue ball station' which is under my chair. As you can see, she picks it up, holds it above the rail and uses the rail to bounce the ball in the direction of the person she wants to throw it or roll it, or kick it back to her.

In her tiny puppy days, when she was running after her frisbee or the blue ball, for some reason she felt she had to jump over the chair rails on her way through. She can't do that now, sadly for her. One of the disadvantages of growing up.

This is her first object of real border collie intensity. She will lie in her station for ages and watch the ball where it happens to be on the kitchen floor and never take her eyes off it, waiting for it to move.

If I am busy working in the kitchen, at the sink or the counter preparing food, she'll bring the ball and position it between my feet so that, should I have a spare moment in my work, I will be able to instantly kick it in her direction. And yes, that does happen. 🙂 Yesterday she threw the ball at Rupert (our cat) who was sitting on the kitchen floor. When Rupert didn't seem to 'get it', she took the ball over to him, dropped it at his feet and ran back to her station under the chair, waiting for him to kick it back. I did my best by trying to take his paw to hit it back, but I think he needs some more time to get the point of this game.

The Box Came First

I have just completed my submission for the AAW POP (Professional Outreach Program) invitational exhibition, "Ceremony" to be held at the American Association of Woodturning Symposium in Phoenix, AZ June 12 – 14th, at the Phoenix Convention Center. It will be exhibited at the American Association of Wood Art in St. Paul, Minnesota before traveling to Phoenix, Arizona. I will be demonstrating at that symposium.

The piece is turned from African blackwood, surface embellished with egg shell, inlaid with thuya burl and with a 24k gilded egg. It is approximately 6" high, 3" diameter.
