Project 366

A project I undertook in 2012 to share one photograph I took each day of that leap year. The subjects are diverse and show the development of my own photographic skills as I learned how to use my camera and compose photographs as I wanted them to be seen and enjoyed.

Heart of the Matter – 70/365

Yes, I am still here! Yes, I am still taking pictures for my 365 project (most days). But life is getting in the way. I am in the middle of the demolition of my kitchen including some structural work (stuff you find in old houses when you open up walls). It will be followed by rebuilding, in due course. I am not doing the work as you probably guess, but it means that everything is covered in dust and there is rubble everywhere you look. There are still games of blue ball going on, so generally there is lots of fun and excitement. I am documenting the work going on but that is a private project, not to bore everyone on G+.

Steven went out the other night to pick up something we needed and came back with a lovely bunch of tulips. So this was my subject for day 70 and featured in other photographs after then.

Sounds so fun. Shouldn't winter be over soon?

"Sunday, March 23:
As we continue to watch the monster of a system approaching for Wednesday, things continue to look worse and worse.

All winter, models would predict a storm well in advance of the actual time-frame, but we wouldn't know for sure what is happening until the day before the storm hits. That is what makes this storm a scary one to forecast.
Models have consistently agreed on a full-out blizzard from an intense Nor'Easter affecting the Maritimes on Wednesday. This has been the consensus for the past 4 days, which is highly unusual for weather models in the winter. All winter, models fluctuated, disagreed, and flat-out failed at forecasting a storm; but this time all 3 major models are agreeing and they are all painting a horrifying picture for the Maritimes on Wednesday.

This storm continues to surprise many senior and amateur meteorologists as being really intense.

CBC meteorologist Peter Coade says the storm could be "crippling," and might bring as much as 40 or 50 centimetres of snow.

He said when he looks at his charts it reminds him of White Juan, the enormous blizzard that swept across Atlantic Canada in 2004 and dropped a metre of snow in some areas. This isn't a good picture to be reminded of when thinking of winter storms.

Currently, I believe Peter is correct with snowfall amounts being between 40 and 50 centimetres, possibly even more should this storm strengthen even more. Winds will be of hurricane force, which means sustained winds and gusts higher than 120km/h, especially across Nova Scotia.

Power outages are likely across most of the Maritimes on Wednesday as the system moves in and the system continues to strengthen.

There isn't much more to say except: batten down the hatches, take out your emergency supplies (or buy some if you need it) and be ready for a monster of a storm on Wednesday. This looks to be the storm of the year for us, here in the Maritimes."

Spring Thaw and Flood – 76/365

I have got very behind on posting my photographs due to various factors including illness and major renovations (with huge amounts of building dust everywhere), but I am making a start on catching up. Most days I was able to take photographs, so little by little I will be sharing them here.

On this day, although it was bitter cold, the ice had begun to melt on previous warmer days and the scene was encouraging. Winter will come to an end! I parked on the side of the road and scrambled down icy banks and through dense woods full of thorny wild rose bushes which tore into my jeans to get this image. I have to say it was better seen from the bridge, but there are huge heavy cables strung in front of the scene, so this was a better photograph.

The Hustle and Bustle of City Night Life – 75/365

I always take my camera with me when I know I am going into the city. Who am I kidding? I take my camera with me whenever and wherever I go, because… you never know what you might see. In the city, at night though, I am fascinated by the lights and the moving traffic and as always I like to play to create effects that will give the feeling of the motion and the excitement you get in that environment.

I remember when, as a little girl, I was sitting on the back seat of the car, leaning against my mother, watching the city lights as we drove through the streets of Montreal at night. When we were on the mountain, the lights below were specially beautiful. Even now, I recall those moments vividly every time I see city lights.

I loved the colours of this one, taken on Sunday night. It really gave me the feeling that I was hoping to convey of a city at night. It is such a sharp contrast from the peaceful country night, lit by stars and moon, moving through the sky with a quiet dignity and grace.
