Campanula Punctata, Spotted Bellflower

These pretty flowers were growing in the front of the local high school. I originally shared a photograph of them very early on in this project, in this post Spotted Bellflower and described them as ‘gentle on the eyes’. I don’t even remember photographing them last year, so I should make another diary entry to look out for them again in September. Bells were what rang when I was in school and I admit they were pretty strident, but from what we hear from our house, it sounds as if students here have more of a siren sounding to alert them of classes changing etc. Can you imagine what stress these sounds must pile on to an already stressful day for school children? Long gone are the days when a teacher stood outside a small school in the playground, ringing a handbell and the children formed orderly lines before going into class. For those of us whose lives are no longer ordered by the sound of wailing sirens or ear splitting bells, I wish you all a gentle day, whatever you are doing. Red Pelargonium

Today we have something that is no shrinking violet, my friends! No, today we have a vibrant, bold, even flamboyant red pelargonium. When I was looking through my photographs to share today, this glamorous beauty fairly danced out and hit me in the eye with its bright pop of colour. It took me back to that day in late September almost eighteen months ago, at the start of my project, when a walk with my camera yielded a rich abundance of growing things like this one, to store up for the daily flower postings. Hawksbeard

At first glance at this wild flower I immediately thought ‘dandelion’, that is to say the one that we all have known throughout our lives, whether we live in the city or the country. In one way I am almost right, as it is a member of the aster family and what this means, of course, is that we have another excuse for a celebration – a World Wild Aster day! Enjoy the bright happy flowers here with their petals that look like pieces of yellow paper cut out and stuck together to form a sun shape. And have a happy WWAD, my friends. Some Kind of Daisy

UPDATE: See Below for the answer to the game:
Today’s fun is a guessing game. The different options for names for this flower ranged from Florist’s Daisy, Persian Daisy, Boston Daisy, African Daisy, China Aster, Cape Rain Daisy and Indian Chrysanthemum. I’ve taken a tour round the world in this, but none of the suggestions had that texture I see on the petals, nor the fine ends of where they meet the centre of the flower. Not one was actually in the aster family, not even the China one, which is why, although the titles say different daisies, I am not declaring this a World Wide Aster day. But you know, you can celebrate today if you want! Why not? Just choose a reason and celebrate. I’m going to celebrate today as being a World Daisy Tour day, though I know at least one will be calling it a Pink Flower Day!

Answer to the guessing game as supplied by my friend Janet, who has pointed out that this is, in fact, the Marguerite daisy, which IS, in fact, an aster, as it turns out! It is a native of the Canary Islands, so here we have one more country on the itinerary for today!
