Poppy Bouquet

Poppy Bouquet

Poppy Bouquet

Speaking of gifts (which we were the other day) here is a gift to myself and shared, of course, with you. I know we have seen poppy photos on here before (and no doubt will again) but this is a little different. In my rewilded garden this appeared to me just like a bouquet or posy that someone had made specially to give me a visual treat when I visited. The single red papery thin wild blossom stood out against the soft white wispy seed heads around it. They almost look like baby’s breath. Have a happy week ahead, my friends, starting with this posy for us all! And if you want to see a bonus post, just because I couldn’t resist photographing it, you can see it here: https://www.elliekennard.ca/fuchsia-web . The name kind of gives it away. Fuchsia Web

Spider Web and Fuchsias

Spider Web and Fuchsias

Some things just have to be photographed and this was one of those. Steven spotted it early on a foggy morning, right outside of my kitchen window. You can even see the tiny drops of water on the individual strands on the webs. The fuchsias behind it form the perfect backdrop to see the details of the work this spider performed one night. You can see it enlarged by tapping or clicking on the image. I’m sure you appreciate why I had to capture it.

Early Clover

Early Clover

Early Clover

I know, this is not really early clover, but late in the season clover. On the other hand I think it is a young flower that is about to develop more of the beautiful pink petals you see underneath. I just loved the texture of those little… what? spikey bits going on at the top. This is not the most spectacular bloom but on this post I ask that you humour me by taking a close look at this and really seeing the detail in the little flower we take so much for granted. I guess when we think of ourselves or others being a little ‘spiky’ we might think of it as negative. But maybe it also can be interesting, if tempered with the softness that is underneath, so we can look closely and see that before we judge ourselves or others too harshly. I hope your day has only a few spikey bits in it, all of them interesting. You can click or tap the image above to view in large in the gallery directly now, a new development on my posts. Black Oil Sunflower

Black Oil Sunflower

Black Oil Sunflower

Speaking of gifts and the help I get from wildlife in my gardening (seems to be a bit of a theme lately), today’s flower is a result of the birds planting it in our hanging basket. This hangs right next to our bird feeders (as you see below) and obviously one seed got away from whatever it was that had wanted to eat it. I always think of sunflowers growing to a height of many feet (this year in particular they seem to be up to 10 or 12 feet high), so this very modest one is much more practical for its location. It was a lovely surprise to see it there, so I had to photograph it, with Steven steadying me as I stood on a stepladder. This gift from the birds to us I now pass on to you in the photo for your Saturdays’ Flower a Day post.
