White Campion

The other week Steven called me to tell me that there was a small white flower at the base of a tree. Flowers are getting thin on the ground these days (excuse the pun) so he keeps his eyes open for me to make sure I don’t miss anything. When I asked him which tree, he said it was the big old maple tree. We are surrounded by big old maple trees here, but this is absolutely the biggest and oldest one on our property and has been featured in my photographs more than once. It probably won’t last much longer as it is hollow, occupied by a family of raccoons and loses branches and bark with every big storm. Right at the base of this venerable tree, half buried by leaves, grass and broken bits of bark I found this single campion flower. It was such a contrast to the elderly resident that towered over it, a pure white delicate little bloom, seeming to shelter beside its gnarled protector. They are both fragile in their own way, one from its small size, the other from its great age. Whether you are gnarled, young, small or otherwise, have a lovely day, my friends. Seven Acres Dahlia

Seven Acres Dahlia

Happy November! Here we are at the start of another month and at post number 415 in our flower a day journey. Thanks for sticking with me, friends! To celebrate I am featuring another beautiful dahlia from our local flower farm. In case you wondered what the name of this farm is, look up.. look way, way up! in the words of the Jolly Green Giant – yes, that does give my age away just a bit! It’s in the title. This bloom is like another burst of gentle spring sunshine. I hope it warms your hearts as you start your day today (or gives you sweet dreams if it is nighttime). Red Mexican Zinnia

Red Mexican Zinnia

Red Mexican Zinnia

I don’t know about you, but I think of a crown when I look at this flower with the bee. There is no necklace on this but those rich red petals look like a ruff. Then there are the little gold spikes surrounding a red velvet centre where the bee sits, like a jewel. These natural sights are more precious than any real crowns, at least to me, because they are freely available to be sown and grown for all to admire, rich or poor. As so many plants, they are members of the Aster family, perfect for World Wide Aster Day on this last day of October. I was looking at seeds for zinnias last night (yes, I plan to grow my own next year if I can) and the choices are bewildering! How is it possible to avoid bankruptcy when you see all the possibilities? I’m rambling now, so I will let you all get on with your day with the thought of this lovely flower and its bee. I wish you all a richly happy WWAD, my friends. View all posts on the Home page.  A Flower a Day #414

Red Petunia

Red Petunia

Today it’s time for a bright splash of red to cheer your Tuesday, my friends! I seem to remember that this Petunia beauty was in a planter, probably in our village main street and no doubt I caught it on a walk one afternoon or evening. There is little else to observe about this as it really speaks for itself, like a red trumpet calling for attention. So I am giving it the appreciation it deserves. I hope this colourful flower wakes you up ready for your day! View all posts on the Home page.  A Flower a Day #409
