Magnolia Opening

Magnolia Opening

Magnolia Opening

At the end of another year, I am posting a flower that speaks of hope and promise along with an elegant beauty. Once again enhanced by a recent rainfall, this opening magnolia bud from our tree is a beautiful symbol of good things to come. The magnolia tree in our garden has weathered hurricanes and winter storms that have damaged it severely, once destroying the centre completely, but each time it recovers to bring us a wonderful feast for the senses of sight and smell. When in bloom, the scent of the tree which is at least 20 feet tall is intoxicating and total strangers have driven up to ask us if they could photograph it, it is so beautiful. A single blossom alone is enough to delight the senses, so on that heady note, I look forward to the next year of flowers, sending everyone a warm hug from wintry Nova Scotia to wherever you are. Yellow Tulip

Yellow Tulip

Yellow Tulip

We have very few tulips in our garden, have never actually planted any I don’t think, and so what we get are all hardy volunteers that have survived at least 24 years of lawn mowing. This is one of those survivors, after a shower. I am a soft touch when it comes to any flowers with raindrops on them, so I can’t resist getting my camera out when I see one, like this. Perhaps the tulip itself might not have been the most outstanding bloom in my project, but the drops outlining it in this way lift it out of the ordinary, giving us a bright spot to start your day, whenever you see it. I hope you have some moments that elevate your day in some way, as these tiny drops briefly turned this into a jewelled wonder. Flower a Day #474 View all posts on the Home page.

Leopard Print Orchid

Leopard Print Orchidy

Leopard Print Orchid

Today’s flower has been renamed specially for you viewers. It might be confusing for those viewing on a small screen, but those who visit the image in full screen mode and zoom in will understand why it is a Leopard Print Orchid. This photograph was taken in March of this year, when orchids were thin on the ground in Nova Scotia ;-). It’s not always easy photographing flowers encased in plastic wrap in a builder’s merchant environment but this one didn’t come out too badly. Many of us in the Northern Hemisphere (the more Northern districts) are spending more time indoors, so I know many are enjoying these flowering in their homes. The only flowers that I have managed to keep flowering (I use that term loosely) are the cyclamen plants I bought a year ago. As I hurt my knee in a fall last week, I haven’t been able to get out walking for a few days, so for my enjoyment of nature today I am watching squirrels playing together up and down the tree trunk outside my window. There are greys, a black, a couple of babies at least, possibly red ones enjoying the fun. It is such a joyous scene! I hope something brings you a smile today, just as these have brought me. Orange Lily

Orange Lily

Orange Lily

This photograph has not done this gorgeous lily justice! There is something so elegant, so ornamental about this flower, it’s hard to believe that it was growing outdoors in a garden in Nova Scotia, not in some exotic location, not even in a heated greenhouse. Some beauty seems fragile but has an indomitable strength that enables the owner to flourish and thrive. So this lily is currently dormant in that garden, but will grow again to astonish me the next time I see it. I will try to do better photographing it next time I see it. This is another photograph taken near the start of my project, in July of 2020, just waiting for the right time to delight me again. I hope it brightens your day too, my friends.
