Pink Bundle

Tansyleaf millefoil, common yarrow

Tansyleaf millefoil, common yarrow

Speaking of cheering, which we were yesterday, and in fact every day, I am throwing this pink bundle of tansyleaf millefoil, or common yarrow for you to catch. Scattered through the roadsides and fields in mid summer, the tiny, tightly packed blooms are not the most flamboyant we’ve had on here. Despite their size they have lovely detail in each bloom, something we would probably overlook until they are shoved in our faces, as they are here. They are tall and leggy, with a tuft at the top of their three foot stems, and incredibly useful as a medicinal herb. I read: “Yarrow is an herb. The above ground parts are used to make medicine. Yarrow is used for fever, common cold, hay fever, absence of menstruation, dysentery, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, gastrointestinal (GI) tract discomfort, and to induce sweating. Some people chew the fresh leaves to relieve toothache”. So for today’s pink flower day we also have a flower that can help you to stay ‘in the pink’! I hope this post and flower put you on that path for today. Hugs to all. Flower a Day #493 View all posts on the Home page.

Hypericum Stars

Hypericum, St. John's Wort

Hypericum, St. John’s Wort

Today we needed a bit of brightening up and as this St. John’s Wort (Hypericum) reminded me of yellow stars, this is what we have to start our day and cheer us up. It’s wonderful to think that flowers that have medicinal properties are just growing wild in the fields for us to use. I read that it is like a weed in some parts of North America (here?) and used medicinally in parts of Europe. How strange that it is described as what sounds like a nuisance in one place, while in another it is used (effectively, apparently) to treat mild to moderate depression. SAD and anxiety. I believe it, as just looking at this flower today has lifted my spirits. I hope it has lifted yours, dear readers. Flower a Day #492 View all posts on the Home page.

Chewed Pink Zinnia

Chewed Pink Zinnia

Chewed Pink Zinnia

For all of my zinnia loving friends, here is evidence that we are not alone in our admiration! Something loved this enough to add it to their menu. So many of my readers have told me that zinnias always make them smile and feel happy, and they do exactly the same for me. They can be like this one, a little ragged from being mistaken for dinner and sporting strange colour combinations (that somehow still work) makes no difference at all. They still bring me joy as I hope they do for you today, my friends. If you feel like it today, go out wearing a fuchsia pink outfit with a maroon hat, crowned with a yellow feather you find on the ground. That way the smiles would certainly grow everywhere you go. Have a fun day if you can, my friends. Flower a Day #491 View all posts on the Home page.

Regular Daylily

Regular Daylily

Regular Daylily

“A regular daylily?” you ask. “What kind of name is that?” I thought of it when I was processing it ready for posting. Bear with me, please, and I’ll explain. Many years ago we went with friends for a drive down to the tip of the province of Nova Scotia, where whale watching is the local passtime and a thriving business, pre pandemic at least. As we drove around the coast, I spotted some interesting looking ducks and asked my Nova Scotia born friends what they were. The wife took one look and said “I think they’re just regular ducks”. I always remember that. One person’s regular duck is another person’s novelty, in this case, the Eider duck. Today I present to you a common sight around here in the summer, a ‘regular’ orange daylily that grows like a weed. Perhaps for you it’s a novelty and a delight to the eyes as it still is for me, after all these years. I hope so. Sending warm hugs to all. The Flower a Day #488 View all posts on the Home page.
