Crowned

I couldn’t resist this pretty little pink crown I saw on this curled Queen Anne’s Lace flower. The plant is a relation to dill and cilantro and is often called a wild carrot. If you look closely into the centre of the flower you will see a tiny dark red dot, which came, according to folklore, from Queen Anne, who pricked her finger while tatting lace. The dot is a way to differentiate this from the poison hemlock plant. That is a good thing, as the plant has, in the past, been used for different medicinal purposes and obviously a mistake could be risky! The red dot most probably is there to attract insects to come to pollinate it, though its purpose is not known for certain. There’s so much even the experts don’t know! Enjoy your day, my friends, with all the joy you can find in it. Flower a Day #498 View all posts on the Home page.

Burst of Sunshine

Burst of Sunshine

Burst of Sunshine

Yesterday I promised a burst of sunshine and so I am treating you today to another of Steven’s dahlia flowers. Those of us in the Northern Hemisphere are beginning to have longer days, though for us the temperatures are still well into the minuses most of the time. The sun is getting stronger, I am sure of it though it is not making a dent in the snow cover. Still, it does make it all look very lovely, with winter blue skies to bring cheer to everyone and when you add in this bright bloom, I think we have a great combination for a great start to the day. Lavender Blue

Lavender Blue

Lavender Blue

Doesn’t this patch of lavender flowers, complete with its bee, just take you to a sunny summer afternoon, full of the wonderful perfume and sounds of humming insects? I can look at this, close my eyes and almost be there, with the warm sun on my face and a light breeze just moving the flower stems, gently, not enough to dislodge the insects hard at their work. This time is not as far away as it seems, so I am loving just looking out at the deep white covering outside my window and knowing that the scene I picture here is not many weeks away…. okay, months away… Each season has its particular beauty to enjoy, but I confess that the dream of spring and summer makes the winter bright cold that much more bearable. Have a lovely day, whether you are indoors, out in the cold, snowy world, or you live in the Southern hemisphere and have the joy of seeing these in your own garden today! White Moss Rose

White Moss Rose

White Moss Rose

There was a whole planter filled with these beautiful little blooms outside of the farm shop we visit. In the photograph and possibly in the real, the leaves in this are like stars around the delicate white petals. The beautiful yellow centres will particularly appeal to those who love to enlarge the image, viewing full screen, to view the details. And for those who look closely, there is a tiny white star type display right in the middle of the yellow middle, like a second flower, almost. Does that count for 2 for 1 flower day? I can’t think of a better deal, so am happy to send this special bargain to you all, my friends. A bargain in beauty is a good buy indeed, especially when it’s a giveaway!
