Dreamy Frilled Poppy

Dreamy Frilled Poppy

Dreamy Frilled Poppy

Poppies are a favourite of mine, obviously, as here is yet another to help to cheer your day! This is a beauty from my friend Jane’s garden. (Thank you again, Jane!). This one is a bright red frilled one with a beautiful, dreamy quality, in total contrast to the simpler ones I have shared recently. After a beautiful sunny yellow marigold flower yesterday, today’s is full of the warmth and passion of life! These petals look like flounced skirts caught in the middle of a swirling dance of joy. The buds behind will soon be bursting into dance to join in the fun. If you can, have a bit of a dance today, celebrating the very fact of being alive. I will join you! Marigold and Bee

Marigold and Bee

Marigold and Bee

Marigolds are such warming flowers. The colours vary from flaming, almost red oranges to pale shades, through this beautiful rich yellow. They really evoke summer to me, as I always plant some in my vegetable garden to deter pests and encourage better yields for some crops. Then, as I always have spare seedlings, they are scattered around the house and garden wherever I find a bit of spare soil. The bee is the bonus today, though, as they always are for the garden and for us. I hope your day has more bonuses in store! Flower a Day #510 View all posts on the Home page.

Early Green Hydrangea

Early Green Hydrangea

Early Green Hydrangea

I seem to have featured this particular display of hydrangeas at so many stages, but I make no apologies, as I loved seeing and documenting the progression. This is really early in the opening of the flowers, with the delicate, pale green colour dominant in the smallest buds, giving way to the whiter, fuller blooms below. There is something beautiful to appreciate in all stages of flowers, as we have all remarked many times, but surely one of the most appreciated is the freshness of new beauty as it appears. Seeing this photograph has taken me back to yet another unencumbered walk, this time at the end of August, presumably still in warm days. I feel the same warmth today… but sitting here in the living room, dressed in a warm sweater, with the wood stove burning brightly behind me. There is deep snow on the ground outside and the temperature of -8°C (17.6°F) feels (apparently) like -14°C (6.8°F). Then I look at this photograph again and I feel warm from a different source, as I did on that day. Oh! The power of the imagination! Flower a Day #509 View all posts on the Home page.

Pink Flower Day

Pink Cosmos

Pink Cosmos

Today I couldn’t resist these beautiful pink Cosmos flowers again. Just looking at them reminds me of that day I took the photograph at the end of October. It seems so long ago now I didn’t believe the date on this picture and so I went and double checked it to be sure. Yes, it was October 30, when I was walking and dropped by the garden of my friend who was expecting her first baby in a short time. The flowers were still blooming, I was able to walk in my ordinary shoes, it was warm enough that I was just wearing a light sweater, no heavy coat, hat, hand warmers and mitts. Today it’s so cold and with so much deep snow on the ground outside my window, that that day in October seems to be a lifetime away. The baby has been born and is beautiful (of course), the Cosmos bush is buried in white and once again a walk involves at least 10 minutes of putting on warm gear. But actually I find that exciting, as it means that this post will seem a lifetime away in a few short Flower a Day weeks! So let’s look forward to those happy days, my friends.
