Rose of Erin

Rose Perfection
Rose Perfection

This glorious rose is growing outside my dentist’s and almost made me late for my appointment as I gazed at it. I asked her if she knew the name of it for my post and she said that a gardener patient thought it was a Seven-Sisters rose. It’s true there are 7 blooms on each spray, as you see here and after doing a little research I found that name is for one officially called Rosa Multiflora, with many names including floribunda and baby rose. As that particular variety blooms in early summer, I am not sure if this is really the name as we were well on into late August when I took this photograph. So, in honour of my dentist, a kind friend who does everything she can to support local artists I have decided to call this post by her name. The name the plant is given isn’t important at all: it’s the beautiful qualities that matter, as it does for people. If you are able to be near a good friend today, give a hug in whatever way you are able, as they enrich our lives, even more than flowers do. A Flower a Day #349 View all posts on the Home page.

Butterfly Bush

Butterfly bush

The reason for butterfly bushes, or buddleia is, obviously, butterflies! And as I was trying to photograph this intoxicatingly perfumed spray of flowers, I kept being divebombed by hummingbirds and bees and finally a butterfly. Much as I love hummingbirds and bees, I was really glad to see this little fellow (lady?) land just where I was aiming my lens. I know that usually the photograph is all about a flower, but this time my focus shifted to get the detail in the insect. I hope you will forgive the fact that the tiny blooms are almost all out of focus. You see the brilliant colour, though I wish you could have smelled the perfume as I did. Hugs to all my friends. Borage

Borage
Borage

I had no idea what this plant was when I took this as it was photographed in a friend’s garden when they were away and I was looking after their cat. It shouldn’t have surprised me as they have all kinds of herbs and interesting plants, including the rather lovely coneflower I posted the other day. They also gave me some bee balm for my own garden, which you will see in due course in this project. This historic medicinal herb, borage, is beloved of all kinds of bees and so delicate and floaty looking hanging from those arching fine hairy stems. Have a lovely day, everyone! Field Sowthistle

Field Sowthistle

It’s time for another brilliant splash of yellow from this wildflower growing on the side of the road. Wildflower or weed, whatever you want to call it, doesn’t change the way that it brightens up the landscape as you walk or drive by. The details inside this pretty little thing are worth checking out on the fullscreen gallery, as there are so many tiny filaments packed in there. I hope this spot of sunshine brightens your day, friends. A Flower a Day #346 View all posts on the Home page
