Pink Tipped Dahlia

There are few flowers that say summer warmth and sunshine like a dahlia, and this one is a classic example. It’s a favourite in our garden and possibly is the variety Tahiti Sunrise. (Don’t we all wish that we were watching a beautiful Tahiti Sunrise right now??) While we haven’t been sure if we will be growing dahlias again next year, looking at this beauty makes me feel certain that we will find space for some. I remember one year when Steven was teaching somewhere away (remember those days?) and I was on ‘frost and pest watch’. I seemed to spend a lot of time devising ways to cover the plants as they outgrew their protections and in preventing the earwigs from destroying the tiny emerging shoots of the slow growers. When they bloom, full of flowers as beautiful as this, all that was forgotten. Hard work in a garden pays such wonderful dividends. Have a lovely day, everyone. White Knight

White Knight, Sweet Alyssum

White Knight, Sweet Alyssum

. Today’s Flower a Day treat is the hybrid Sweet Alyssum called White Knight, which to me looks like lots of constellations of happy little faces. These are such common flowers, I’m sure you all have seen them at least once, if not every year, as they are frequently used as bedding plants. The common is often overlooked, so, as usual, I have decided to shine a spotlight on a tiny bunch in the crowd to bring it to our attention and hope you appreciate seeing these in an up close and personal way. After this I will never look at clumps of alyssum in the same way again, but will seek out their tiny details. Happy Wednesday, everyone! Flower a Day #466 View all posts on the Home page.

Thin Leaf Coneflower

Thin Leaf Coneflower

Thin Leaf Coneflower

. We are moving along swiftly through the month, my friends, and the days are getting so much shorter that it seems almost as if the sunset is appearing on the heels of the sunrise! That might be a slight exaggeration, but it points out to me one great advantage of this time of year, which is that we can usually get to see both in our day. Last Friday night’s sunset, for example, was extraordinary, with multiple layers of deep red between dark storm clouds. Unfortunately I was driving and not able to photograph it for you, but try to imagine it, if you can. Most sunrises these days are also rather lovely and I don’t have to be too much of an early bird to see them in all their splendour. Enjoy this season for that reason, as soon enough the days will stretch and we risk missing seeing one or the other of these splendid gifts. The lovely gold and brown thin leaf coneflower is just a warm reminder of days to come when the gorgeous blooming scenes around us are enough to compensate us for sunrises that are out of reach. Aster Profusion

Aster Profusion

Aster Profusion

I promised to find you some asters so that we could celebrate another World Wild Aster Day and I always try to keep my promises, so today is the day. This sweet grouping of wild asters can take us back to the lovely month of September, when we didn’t have to think of putting on extra coats, scarves, hats and mittens, not to mention high visibility jackets, just to go for a walk. We could wear light shoes and get some speed up, not laden with heavy boots. Now that is something to look forward to again next year! We do get a beautiful winter light now, especially lovely when there is snow on the ground and the trees, so I know that we should treasure each season and not yearn too much for the next. That would be wishing our lives away, so we won’t do that! Enjoy today for today, my dear friends. Hugs to all. Flower a Day #464 View all posts on the Home page.
