White Edged Poppy

White Edged Poppys

White Edged Poppy

In the background of the Crumpled Poppy post from a few days ago, you can see what I think is this white edged poppy. It almost stole the scene, so obviously I had to feature it at some point and that point is today. This is another delightful bloom from the garden of my green-fingered friend, Jane. When I look back on the great variety of different flowers that I photographed on that visit to her relatively modestly sized garden, it shows me how achieving such a wonderful garden is within the grasp of anyone who has a love for gardening and is prepared to put in the work. That’s true of many things in life. I hope your day is filled with such achievements from your hard work, of whatever kind it might be. Flower a Day #506 View all posts on the Home page.

World Wild Aster Day

Mauve Wild Asters

Mauve Wild Asters

In the past I have mentioned how much I learn on this project. Right here in this post we have a classic example! The colour of these beautiful little wild asters is ‘mauve’ or pale purple. I didn’t like the word mauve for my title, (I’m so fussy!) so decided to see if there were another word for it. I found this information from Wikipedia: “Mauve /ˈmoʊv/ ( listen) (rhymes with “grove”; from the French form of Malva “mallow”) is a pale purple. Mauve is named after the mallow flower. Another name for the color is mallow with the first recorded use of mallow as a color name in English in 1611.” So a flower is responsible for the name of a colour. Who knew that?? So it seems our lives would be duller in more ways than we can imagine without flowers. We would never have had lovely mauve asters, just ‘pale purple’ ones. So, enlightened with this fascinating information, my friends, I hope that you have a lovely and happy World Wild Aster day. Flower a Day #505 View all posts on the Home page.

Red Dahlia Thread

Red Dahlia Thread

Red Dahlia Thread

It’s time for another cheery little red dahlia for today’s flower. It’s pretty obvious what attracted me to this in the first place, with its lovely deep, rich colour and the beautifully curled petals so neatly arranged. In writing that, I just recalled how our little cat Claudia will sit very neatly with her back arched, front and back legs pressed together just so, tail curled around the lot, like tying a package. Today I watched her arrange herself like that and she must have thought her legs were not perfectly aligned, as she adjusted one back foot an infinitesimal amount until it was to her satisfaction. But, going back to this pretty dahlia, if you examine it closely, you will notice that, although there is no insect present, we have a thread drawn across the petals as a reminder that one was there not long ago. I suppose I could have removed the thread, but actually I liked the evidence of the absence. Have a lovely day, everyone, hugs to all. Flower a Day #504 View all posts on the Home page.

Pink Peony Opening

Pink Peony Opening

Pink Peony Opening

A peony flower that is making its transition from a tightly packed green ball with ants crawling over the surface to a full blown drama of a bloom has this lovely mid stage of promise. The petals seem to display the shy gawkiness of a teenager waiting to achieve adulthood, being neither child nor adult. This blossoming beauty shows the broad strokes of colour that will characterise the fully open flower, but hides the details within. Will the centre be a paler tone or will they display a deeper pink? Each plant is unique within its species of course, but each bud also contains a totally unique flower. If we look closely at each we could see these minute variations that distinguish each lovely one. Taking the time to look closely at the flowers I have found and photographed in their different stages has brought me such rich rewards. I hope you enjoy these as much as I.
