Pink Lupins

Pink Lupins

Pink Lupins

In this part of the world, lupins (or lupines) are a regular site in early summer, whether purple, or white, yellow, or pale pink as here. They line the ditches and are scattered on any barren ground they can find. Strangely enough, we have none on the field next to us, but these are in a bit of scrub ground near our community centre/fire station. The pink ones are more unusual and it’s not easy to photograph such tall spears in this format, as they lend themselves more to ‘portrait’ orientation. That doesn’t work well for screens that are sideways (laptops etc) and doesn’t fit my project, so I am glad I was able to get these to work for me. I hope these bring back good country memories for some and give a happy pink flower day for everyone. Flower a Day #523 View all posts on the Home page.

Fleurette

Fleurette

Fleurette

I loved this crowd of little purple flowers so much! A label I photographed at about the same time had “Fleurette” on it, so I hope this is what these are. In any case, they are a mass of happiness, rather than a spotlight, today. The word means little flowers, obviously, so it fits perfectly, for me. Purple is a rich colour and I hope this splash of natural richesse brings a good start to your day. Flower a Day #522 View all posts on the Home page.

Blossom

Blossom

Blossom

The other night I dreamed of blossoms. I dreamt that I was out walking and I saw a wild plum or other fruit tree with blossoms on it. I remember I couldn’t believe how early they were flowering, with snow still deep on the ground and temperatures well into the minus range. I ran back to the house to get my camera and tell Steven about them, and when we came back out, all of the fruit trees were in full bloom! It looked amazing, just full of white along all of the branches, and it really would have been, as June is the month we get blossoms. (This photograph was taken June 6th last year.) Dreams of happy future times can fill us with a hope that lifts our spirits in the darkest of days. So don’t stop dreaming, my friends! Flower a Day #521 View all posts on the Home page.

Violet African Violets

Violet African Violets

Violet African Violets

We are coming back inside our warm house again for today’s African violet flower photograph. When I searched for a definition of violet, I found that ‘violet is the color of light at the short end of the visible spectrum, between blue and invisible ultraviolet.’ In the RGB colour mode, violet mixes blue and red light with more blue than red. That looks about right for this photograph. Another fact I learned is that the colour name came from the violet flower. But that sounds a lot like the ‘which came first, the chicken or the egg?’ scenario. That was further confused when I read that the name violet is derived from the latin word viola which means violet. The first recorded use of the colour name violet was in 1370, so we are talking very old chickens and eggs here. I will leave you to ponder this and hope that the rest of your day is as intriguing as I hope this post has been! Flower a Day #520 View all posts on the Home page.
