Passiflora Beauty

Passiflora
Passiflora

The Passiflora or Passion flower always looks to me as if it had been designed by someone in Pixar Studios. It is so colourful and complex and fantastical, the product of a skilled person with a wonderfully creative mind. This beautiful flower was in the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and as always made me catch my breath with delight. I hope it does the same for you today and with this I wish you all a peaceful, colourful and happy weekend.

  1. +Rajalekshmi A I photographed this in a botanical garden in Maine, and you can sometimes find the fruit, passion fruit, or the juice, sweet grenadilla.
    the Wikipedia entry says :
"Most species are found in South America, eastern Asia, southern Asia and New Guinea. Nine separate species of Passiflora are native to the United States, found from Ohio to the north, west to California and south to the Florida Keys. Four or more species are also found in Australia and a single endemic species in New Zealand."
Are you in one of these places? It is a vine so it would be found climbing up structures etc.

  2. Isn't it +Lynn David Newton? Apparently the distribution (according to Wikipedia link in the post) is:
"The family Passifloraceae has a pantropical distribution. Passiflora itself is absent from Africa, where many other members of the family Passifloraceae occur (e.g. the more plesiomorphic Adenia).

Most species are found in South America, eastern Asia, southern Asia and New Guinea. Nine separate species of Passiflora are native to the United States, found from Ohio to the north, west to California and south to the Florida Keys. Four or more species are also found in Australia and a single endemic species in New Zealand. New species continue to be identified: for example, P. pardifolia and P. xishuangbannaensis have only been known to the scientific community since 2006 and 2005, respectively.

Some species of Passiflora have been naturalised beyond their native ranges. For example, blue passion flower (P. caerulea) now grows wild in Spain.[1] The purple passionfruit (P. edulis) and its yellow relative flavicarpa have been introduced in many tropical regions as commercial crops."

I've not seen them often, but this was in Maine.

+Leonardo Hervacio Arenas thank you very much.

    +Gayathri Ramachandran thanks!

  3. Your “pixar” flower is definitely fantastical. I have a plant (succulent, common name is Queen of the Night) that blooms once, maybe twice a year…in the middle of the night…and the amazing blooms last only about two hours. My ritual is to stay up all night to “capture” them. Though, last Spring I fell asleep and woke up to very droopy flowers. Luckily I still have pics from previous years.

    1. Your story reminds me of something I saw in a film starring Waltar Matthau I think. He had a similar plant, invited lots of guests to view it and I think an adorable dog and a little boy were involved in ruining his big moment. Thanks for the comment, Sandra.

  4. Excellent photo. brilliant colors. I agree it must had a very creative mind to design it . Love how you have made it the focal point of the shot. Stand out with all its brilliance
