Fall Purple Deadnettle
Talking of purple, which we were yesterday (only yesterday’s was really faded, on the way out), today’s plant is really very dark purple, even at this late stage in its life. It is growing low down in the undergrowth behind my blackberry bushes, almost hidden. Even if it doesn’t fit the classic picture of a beauty, or even a flower, its curiosity value more than makes up for it. This seems to be the seed pods of that lovely tiny flower I featured in the post I shared in the summer. You can see that one here -“Purple Dead-nettle“. A close inspection showed me these wonderfully textured bristly little heads above those richly coloured fall leaves below. The post linked above gives more details about the possible medicinal use and potential risks of it, so I won’t repeat that information here. Enjoy today’s spiky offering, which I hope you get to examine up close in the full screen view. And have a lovely day, everyone! View all posts on the Home page. A Flower a Day #404

Curious is right – was it really a flower? So hard to tell at this stage but since it has high value without its good looks, I can easily accept it as it comes, as I try to do with most things. Thank you, Ellie, for today’s lesson.
Not really a flower, but most likely a seed pod. In any case, at one point it was a flower, and its curiosity value was enough for me, too. I thought the textures had such a great appeal. And that colour! Thanks again for your spirit of adventure, Janet. 😉
Good morning Ellie. Thanks so very much for sharing that quite unique flower. It is a lovely deep purple for sure but the center is very intriguing and amazing. The little pieces in the center might remind you a little of a picture plant. Those little spikes help you to appreciate don’t touch it too much. Thanks so much for sharing hugs to you and Steve hope you have a great day..
It is certainly unique, and I have just checked it.. the little ‘spikes’, while not soft are actually not particularly aggressive either. Not unpleasant to touch. The little pieces in the centre I suspect are where some seeds were, leaving the hole, possibly. Thanks again, Linda.
