When we first moved back to Canada, almost exactly 24 years ago, when I arrived in Nova Scotia I got a job working in a local stable. Along with caring for the horses I was charged with various gardening tasks around the place. These included strimming (whipper-snipping) and cutting the grass on a ride-on tractor, as well as weeding around some of the flower beds. One of the gardening times I spotted a patch of beautiful blue flowers with reddish copper coloured leaves and thought they looked lovely. I asked the owner (my boss) if I could dig up a bit and take it to my own garden. She told me they were called Bugle and that I was welcome to some. I now have a lawn, flower beds and banks filled with those flowers and plants, which are also called Ajuga (yes, those flowers you have already seen here). They seem to hold as much attraction to bumblebees as they did for me when I first saw them growing. Now that I remember, I realise that these will be flowering well into the summer, because I didn’t start working at the stable until August. So the bees will not be short of food, along with pollen from any of the wildflower mixes I have planted that didn’t get washed away in the storm. This little one in his yellow fur jacket was so busy (and moving so quickly) that he didn’t have time to notice me. I hope you all have a busy and productive day. A flower a Day #257

I think I’d title this ‘the bugle boy of company bee’. Great shot of both, the bee and the bugle. It doesn’t hurt any that the dominant colours are complimentary either. As they say in culinary circles, an excellent pairing. Thank you, Ellie, for this visual delight.
Thank you Janet for the lovely comment. The pairing is serendipitous but then the natural world is the ultimate in perfect colour combinations along with everything else!
They are beautiful flower Ellie love the contrasting colours. Also love the little bee in the flower. It is great to have some flowers that bloom that far into the year. Nice to have the rain to water the flowers today. Hope it stops later so I can get some of my transplants in today. I will be as busy as a Bee if I get that done today.
Thanks Linda, I’m glad you like it. As you hoped, the rain has stopped, but with that frost warning for tonight, maybe hold off on the transplants until tomorrow!
