World Wild Aster Day

Mauve Wild Asters

Mauve Wild Asters

In the past I have mentioned how much I learn on this project. Right here in this post we have a classic example! The colour of these beautiful little wild asters is ‘mauve’ or pale purple. I didn’t like the word mauve for my title, (I’m so fussy!) so decided to see if there were another word for it. I found this information from Wikipedia: “Mauve /ˈmoʊv/ ( listen) (rhymes with “grove”; from the French form of Malva “mallow”) is a pale purple. Mauve is named after the mallow flower. Another name for the color is mallow with the first recorded use of mallow as a color name in English in 1611.” So a flower is responsible for the name of a colour. Who knew that?? So it seems our lives would be duller in more ways than we can imagine without flowers. We would never have had lovely mauve asters, just ‘pale purple’ ones. So, enlightened with this fascinating information, my friends, I hope that you have a lovely and happy World Wild Aster day. Flower a Day #505 View all posts on the Home page.

  1. To paraphrase “What’s in a name?”…an aster, by any other colour, would be as lovely as these sweet clusters of mauve, or lilac, or violet or periwinkle or lavender, or….Our enjoyment of the dear aster whatever hue will always be enhanced by its simple elegance. Thank you, Ellie, for another edifying botanical lesson.

    1. I am happy that you enjoy the simple elegance as much as I do. I know I have more, though none as nicely coloured as these, so will share them in the weeks to come. Thanks again, Janet.

  2. Thank you so much Ellie. Love the colour and love the information. Also really enjoy the contrast between the colour of the petals and the colour of the centre just makes everything stand up beautifully on its own. Thanks again for sharing I hope you have a great day. Hugs to you and Steve.

    1. They really are special, Linda, with those contrasts of colouring. I’m glad you found the information interesting, too. I live and learn, as it turns out!
