A friend in England shared a photo of lovely vetch and when I commented to say I liked it, she agreed, but said they aren’t so great in the flower garden. I suppose that is a nuisance, but I do love to see their lovely purple-blue colour. These are growing in the field next to our barn, so not a nuisance to anyone and as we can see here, obviously the insects are getting nourishment from them. If you look closely at these skippers you can see what looks like little black threads coming out of their mouths and I think those are their tongues! I am amazed that these are shown in the photograph. I only heard about skipper butterflies last week and the next thing I know I find them in the field, so it shows we never stop learning if we keep our eyes open. Hugs to you all on this Saturday. The vetch is an edible, most particularly when young, since they are a member of the pea family. Another example of not just a decorous plant but one with a purpose…and made all the more endearing with the addition of these small skippers who are enjoying the vetch’s fruit. Thank you,Ellie, for another interesting botany lesson.
Thank you Janet and it’s my pleasure in sharing what I learn and learning from commenters like yourself. It certainly appears that my project is bringing educational mutual benefits I had not envisaged. It was such a thrill to get those little skippers and I hope you saw the tongues.
They are lovely Ellie. Such a pretty color. But they can take over your flower garden if you let them. It was an extra treat to see the butterflies as well. Thanks again for sharing and hope you have a great day. Hugs to you and Steve
I’m sure they can be really invasive and not welcome in a garden, so I was glad that these are just in the field where they belong. I hope you managed to see the butterfly tongues. Hugs back to you both.
