Who has not had one of these plants in our homes at one time or another? They seemed to be all vigour and leaf and hung over the sides of macrame hanging baskets, falling below the brown jute tassels. Why do I not remember noticing the glorious shades of purple that were there and only recall the white and greens and browns? Why did I never notice the beauty of this simple flower? Maybe the bustle of baby and feeding and nappies and so much to do then, meant that this wonder is reserved for these calmer, more reflective days. To take us all back to the 70’s, some in our memories, some in their imaginations, here is a beautiful, gentle, floral reminder of those days. I guess these are now back in fashion. I know I have that macrame pot holder around here somewhere… Have a fun day, if you can, friends! View all posts on the Home page.  A Flower a Day #443

  1. I thought this bloom looked familiar…and it is. It’s the name that is unfamiliar. I know this plant by the unlikely handle of ‘spiderwort’. Even if spiders did have worts (and maybe they do), they would in no way resemble this plant, which is very appealing in how it gracefully descended from our mothers’ macramed plantholders. Perhaps we could rename it something like ‘mom’s pink macramania’. Just a suggestion. Thank you, Ellie, for lovely vision in pink.

    1. I like the name macramania, but in my case I would be the mom, as it was hanging in my laundry area, which was where I first grew it and I probably killed it. Like Linda I didn’t have a lot of success with houseplants. Still don’t, really. I thought briefly that you were referring to the spider plant, which you were not, of course. That’s another that could be in the macramania group! Thanks again, Janet.

  2. It is a beautiful colour Ellie. I don’t remember ever seeing one like that before. And I am not sure what plants you were referring to. I’ve never had very many plants around at all when I was younger. All I ever did was kill house plants. Thanks again for sharing. Hugs to you and Steve.

    1. Thanks Linda. It used to be called Wandering Jew, which has now, obviously, been changed to Wandering Dude. Alsoknown as Spiderwort, as Janet pointed out. You aren’t killing house plants now, that’s for sure!
