Swirling

Once again, one of Steven’s beautiful dahlias is the flower of the day. This beauty seems to swirl with red petals, full of life and, no doubt, insect visitors. I love dahlias and peonies as cut flowers, but both have to be carefully cleared of their inhabitants before bringing them into the house. If you don’t, you will find earwigs and potentially bees crawling about the table under the vase. So tenacious are they that, no matter how much you gently tap them upside down against the ground, always losing a few petals as you do so, a stray bug or two will always be found wandering around the kitchen sink or sideboard looking for a way home. Tenaciousness has its downside, at least in this case for insects. In other cases, when it’s not sheer pig-headedness, it can be a really positive quality. So we should hold onto our hopes and dreams as if we were earwigs in a peony. They keep hope alive in us. Flower a Day #479 View all posts on the Home page.

  1. Petals one can drown in…utterly lovely. Looking deep into its centre, I can get lost for hours in the various visions that are conjured up – that gem in the middle, is it an eye? is that a tongue sticking out? Or is it just loveliness, a feast for the eyes. My vote goes for the last option. Thank you, Ellie, for presenting such an array of choices.

    1. I’m in total agreement in the feast for the eyes, total loveliness choice here, Janet. When the flower was blooming I felt I could just sit staring at it for hours, seeing more and more beauty, the longer I looked. Now I have to be content with the photo until next season. Thank you for the appreciation, Janet.

  2. Such a lovely color and a very intriguing explanation. When you zoom in to the center it does look like the petals are swirling around the middle. Just like they’re at a dance. Always enjoy seeing Steve’s dahlias in bloom. He has such a variety. Thanks again for sharing hope you both have a great day.

    1. Thanks, Linda. It’s true that this year they were a bit of a disappointment and yours were really lovely. I’m not sure if he will do them again, maybe we will rely on yours! Hugs to you both.
