Peony for Picking

If you remember yesterday’s bristly bellflower featured post you will now see why that compliments these peonies that I pick for displaying in a vase. If you don’t recall the look of the bellflower, a quick glance at the bottom of this blog post will remind you. The gentle mauve/pink and white coloured petals, as well as the lovely rounded heads of the peony are set off perfectly by the blue/purple of the bell shaped heads of that campanula. There is a lovely warm deeper pink at the heart of this flower, perhaps to beckon pollinators in to find some treasure? Or is it perhaps just to draw our eye past those raindrop jewelled outer edges, to explore the depths? In writing this, I suddenly was seized by a deep yearning to see those beginning to bud and flower again. It’s far too soon to give in to such wishing, but now, in the aftermath of the first of the winter storms, the temptation to sit and dream of such times is very powerful. A look out of the window at the sparkling snow and white rimmed branches has shaken me out of my reverie, so I will take my own advice of the other day and live each day for the beauty it brings. 1. A ruffled beauty with a slightly chewed look, we know that the peony will not open without the help of ants which eat the edges of the petals to unfurl them and reveal the wild glamour within. It is obvious now why the simple design and rich colour of the bellflower is the perfect offset to the wild exquisiteness and subtle hues of the pink peony, once again showing that opposites do attract. Thank you, Ellie, for another daily delight.

    1. Such wonderful folklore, makes such a good story. However they open, their beauty is always welcome here as are your comments. Thanks again.

  2. It is lovely Ellie and I can see how the two flowers would compliment each other. Peony has such a nice soft color to it. But the outside petals seem so different from the center. Like you say it’s designed to attract us to look closer and deeper into how beautifully it is designed. Thanks again for sharing hope you have a great day. Hugs to you and Steve

    1. You know my peonies well, Linda, so maybe next time they are in bloom you’ll be able to see the two flowers together. The different designs of flowers are always a delight to observe, aren’t they? Thanks again.
