Canada Goldenrod and Cutworm Moth

Canada Goldenrod with Dingy Cutworm moth

I was in need of some bright yellow sunshine today and there are few sights more sunny than the Goldenrod. This plant attracts a lot of insects, such as this art nouveau-ish Cutworm Moth. I don’t know why its name includes the word “dingy”, as, though it’s not the most colourful, the patterns on its wings are absolutely exquisite. I hope this bright spot helps to cheer your day, friends. Flower a Day #461

Fall Colours 2021

Out of the Woods

Out of the Woods

For a finale for my Fall Colours 2021 I am sharing the stunning trees at the top of the field bordering the Ravine woods I mentioned yesterday. As we came into full view of these trees with a backdrop of stormy clouds, we stopped and stared in amazement at the breathtaking view. Now we are completely without leaves, coloured or otherwise, and are heading into the depths of winter.  I will come back to look at this full gallery from time to time to remind myself of all of the beauty to look forward to next year. If you want to do the same, you can bookmark this link: Fall Colours 2021

  1. Maybe the cutworm moth is called ‘dingy’ because it insists on lighting on the goldenrod…and by comparison…well, it just can’t compete. Despite its intricate design, it will never outshine the plant on which it sitts. But the golden trees ablaze in the setting sun is another matter. Now, they can compete and indeed have outdone the goldenrod at its game. Luckily for the goldenrod, the trees only get the trophy under particular circumstances whereas the rod is golden most of its life. I hand the trophy to Ellie for bringing us all this brightness when sunlight is in short supply. Thank you. Ellie.

    1. Good point, Janet, the contrast with that bright yellow puts everything else into a dingy category, and it has a really long blooming season, happily. I’m so glad you like my grand finale leaf colour photo. And I really appreciate the comment, thank you.

  2. Thank you very much Ellie. It is bright and cheery and I do love the moth and the design on its wings. The fall colour photo is amazing! You certainly caught it at the right time with the sun on it. I will have to make sure I keep looking at that through the winter. Hope you have a great day. Hugs to you and Steve.

    1. Thanks so much Linda, for your lovely comment. I thought you would enjoy the design on the wings, as you look so closely (intently) at the details in the flowers. You are right, it was so special, that light, that sky, the colour of the leaves, I was very glad to have caught it (with my camera, not the phone this time). I’m happy to leave these in their gallery for any who want to come back to be reminded of the beauty of the fall in Nova Scotia. Thanks again.
