Bristly Bellflower

Bristly Bellflower, Campanula

Bristly Bellflower, Campanula

It seems that I have a lot to learn about the flowers growing around me. For years this has been one of my favourite blooms to cut and display with pink and white peonies, as they flower in my garden at the same time of year. I had no idea that this was a variety of campanula, called Bristly Bellflower. The only thing I knew was that it seemed to grow despite being rather poorly treated and constantly uprooted. I have read today that this is invasive, which in my case is a happy situation. The number of times I was upset because the area had been weeded and this beauty had disappeared are countless. Little did I know that this plant was simply biding its time to reappear and so, the following year I would find just enough scattered plants had regrown to provide me with flowery, bristly stems to set off the peonies in my vases. One year I even asked Steven to transplant some to be sure we didn’t lose it. Now I can give it a name and relax, knowing that even if we wanted to get rid of it, it would not be an easy task. So my peony displays are safe for the future it seems. I hope you all have a lovely day with at least one fun discovery. Flower a Day #485 View all posts on the Home page.

  1. Doesn’t look too bristly to me. It seems much sweeter than that but then who can tell someone’s character until you get to know them better. Perhaps this dear campanula with its yellow pistils prefers the supporting role you give it to the pink and white peonies and only gets bristly when asked to play the leading role. If this is the case, I predict you two will continue to get on just fine. Thank you, Ellie, for this lovely posting and I won’t tell on that it was a starring role.

    1. Believe me, the bristly is there, just down the stem and on the leaves. But I understand bristly and don’t find it the least bit intimidating. I’m so glad you like the little bit player in my bouquet! Thanks Janet.

  2. Thanks so much for sharing this lovely little beauty with us. Again I’m always captured by the exquisite colour of flowers. And the lovely centers in them as well. Glad that this guy was able to keep coming back for you. Hope you have a great day hugs to you and Steve.

    1. Thanks, Linda. I’m glad you liked it. I hope that by (or before) the next time it flowers we will be able to see you in person for coffee again. In the meantime, hugs back to you both.
