Black Oil Sunflower
Speaking of gifts and the help I get from wildlife in my gardening (seems to be a bit of a theme lately), today’s flower is a result of the birds planting it in our hanging basket. This hangs right next to our bird feeders (as you see below) and obviously one seed got away from whatever it was that had wanted to eat it. I always think of sunflowers growing to a height of many feet (this year in particular they seem to be up to 10 or 12 feet high), so this very modest one is much more practical for its location. It was a lovely surprise to see it there, so I had to photograph it, with Steven steadying me as I stood on a stepladder. It has high hopes, this sunflower, possibly thinking it could masquerade as a fuchsia and keep its seeds for itself. Little did it know that its vibrance would give it away to the sharp eye of a certain photographer. Thank you, Ellie, for calling its bluff.
I admit, it did a fairly good job of camouflaging itself, until, at least, it couldn’t resist thrusting that flower into the air. And then it was exposed! I couldn’t resist, as you know, showing that to the world (or at least my viewers). Thanks for the appreciation again, Janet.
It is lovely Ellie. Amazing to see how they can pop up just about anywhere. I had some pop up in my front garden one time planted by the birds. They did a much better job than I did planting in my garden. Love the sunflowers they’re so bright and cheery. They look nice in your fuchsia baskets.
