Hawksbeard

At first glance at this wild flower I immediately thought ‘dandelion’, that is to say the one that we all have known throughout our lives, whether we live in the city or the country. In one way I am almost right, as it is a member of the aster family and what this means, of course, is that we have another excuse for a celebration – a World Wild Aster day! Enjoy the bright happy flowers here with their petals that look like pieces of yellow paper cut out and stuck together to form a sun shape. And have a happy WWAD, my friends. 1. I do like your comparison of a flower created by craftsman, or a grade 6 arts class, Ellie. The petals very much look “cut out” and “stuck on”…contriving to give the plant a down home, unsophisticated look and feel. This is perhaps the very defintion of a weed, because this plant is often found in a garden, pretending to be a cultivated flower. Be that as it may, there is no denying its sunny disposition. Thank you, Ellie.

    1. I’m glad you liked my description, Janet. This ‘weed’ is of a lot of use to the environment, perhaps more than anyone knows. We have real sun today and I hope you do, where you are. Thanks for the thoughts.

  2. I am always intrigued at the names of the flowers. Trying to understand how they match their name. This Little flower certainly is different with the shape of the petals being almost Square and then the fork like ends on the pedals. They are bright and cheery. Hope you have a great day. Hugs to you and Steve.

    1. Thank you Linda, I’m sorry to be replying late to your lovely comment. It’s interesting, for sure and I’m sure somewhere we can find out why such a name was chosen for this little flower. As you say, it’s cheery anyway, just like today with the sun and blue skies. I hope you get out to enjoy it. Hugs back.
