Spear Thistle
These always look to me as if they are exotic plants and should not be growing in this part of the world, but here they are! This humble, prickly plant is the official flower of Scotland but there are many varieties of thistle and no one seems to know for sure which one is the actual symbol representing that country. The Spear is among the contenders, along with the Musk thistle. But it might also be one of the others, such as the Melancholy Thistle or Cotton or Our Lady’s Thistle. We are not in Scotland, so it matters not to us, as long as this unusual flower brings a bit of interest or a smile to your day. View all posts on the Home page. A Flower a Day #450

December 21 Gallery :
A gallery of flowers shared on a daily basis to cheer myself and hopefully you, the viewer too, during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic period. Posts from December 2021
Having inherited the gene from my mother, whose parents both emmigrated from Scotland before her birth, this is a plant near and dear to my heart, as it was to hers. Our house always had many examples of the Scottish thistle – from dishtowels to brooches- around to remind us of our roots. This is a lovely capture of that very plant with its bright purple spikey hair to alert the hiker to the existence of the real danger below. Thank you, Ellie, for another great plant choice.
I think of this and your family wherever I see them and thought of you when making the post. Thanks so much for reminding me of them, nice memories of our youth.
Thanks Ellie it is lovely. The colours on those flowers are amazing even the plant itself when you see one growing so tall some of them. Hope you have a great day. Hugs to you and Steve.
It’s my pleasure and thank you, Linda. I am also amazed when I see them! Have a lovely day yourself.
The processing works very nicely with the blossom
Thanks Jim. Glad you like it.
