Petunia

As a child living in the Town of Mount Royal, I remember that my mother loved petunias. I think I recall (I can never be sure that my young childhood memories are accurate) that they grew down the edge of our short driveway. Today’s Flower a Day is probably unlike any she grew, but every time I see a petunia I am reminded of her and what I think of as a generally happy period in my young life. Although my memories of childhood otherwise are mostly not good ones, it is important for me to keep these positive ones to remind myself that nothing is all bad. I hope that despite this difficult time we all find moments of joy and beauty to hold in our hearts and remember.

  1. Like you, Ellie, the sweet face of the petunia evokes memories of my mother, and like yesterday, it involves a song. I remember my mother singing ‘I’m a lonely little petunia in an onion patch’ as she bustled about the kitchen. It’s got sad lyrics but the tune itself is jaunty. When I opened your post, I immediately heard my mother singing this ditty. Happy memories of a bygone era. This simple little flower belies its hidden powers. Thank you.

    1. I can imagine your mother as you describe her here, Janet. Good memories indeed. A single flower can evoke such powerful emotions sometimes. Thank you.

  2. Thanks Ellie that is one flower I recognize quite easily and know the name of. I do love that color and how all of the veins show up in the petals but then the two little dots in the middle look like eyes looking back at you it is very comforting and does bring back good memories thanks for sharing.
