A place where narcissism is a good thing is the garden, as you can see in this gorgeous narcissus we have in ours. A cheerier flower it’s hard to imagine and one that spreads joy to any who look at it. Apparently, as my Greek friends will know, the name comes from the Greek term ‘narco’ for ‘numb’, as in narcotic, but in this case possibly refers to the intoxicating perfume they give off. When I read that information I went out and smelled this single flower (the only one of its type in our garden).And that is absolutely correct! I almost fell over with the fragrance! 😉 Actually, it really does smell wonderful. As it is beside the huge magnolia tree we have, which is full of strongly perfumed flowers just now, I didn’t know anything else in the garden had a scent at all. You will have to imagine the sweet smell, but you can see the beauty here. Both beautiful and sweet smelling, it is a perfect little package of delight. I wish it would last. Don’t worry, Linda! At least you got to see it today. If you drive up the drive you could smell it (under the forsythia).! Otherwise it will still be there next year, if we still are.

A daffodil by any other name would smell as sweet…and so it does apparently, as you’ve noted. This example is a particularly lovely variety with those orangey accents which showcase the yellow petals nicely. I’m surprised that there is just a single flower as daffodils, or narcissus, love company. Perhaps its just practicising safe social distancing like those of us who are following the guidelines in hope of hastening the departure of the virus. If that is the case, then this narcissus sets us a fine example on that front too. Thank you, Ellie.
You are quite right on so many counts here, Janet. First of all there is social distancing taking place. But I think it is that the other daffodils I have are jealous of this gorgeous scent and have moved away to a respectful distance. None of the others has such a wonderful perfume. The others are there, but as we are in the country, they have room to breathe, so perhaps that’s happening too.
