Mexican Sunflower

I remember exactly where and when (and even how) I photographed this beautiful bloom. We were just leaving the garden that has supplied so many of the recent subjects of my posts. It was late in the afternoon and as we got to the end of the long drive, ready to exit through the gates onto the road, the low sun was just hitting the thick patch of ornamental grasses and tall flowers on display there. We stopped and I got out to take what I thought would be an easy shot but as I approached, I found myself conflicted. The flowers were surrounded by a barrier of spider webs, whichever way I tried to get to them. They were too far away behind them to get a decent shot and in the end I knew I had to just break some webs. That was easier said than done. The single thread was stretched tightly between two plants, and was as resistant as a strand of nylon! It was so strong that I actually laughed out loud. I am not that feeble and I can certainly break a normal spider web with no difficulty. This was something else! Obviously I succeeded despite the challenge. I hope this has given you a smile or a laugh, or at the very least an appreciation for the amazing tensile strength of this fine material woven by such a tiny creature. As they say here, have an ‘awesome’ day everyone! View all posts on the Home page.  A Flower a Day #426
