The holly bush is not known for its flowers but for its fruits, but even so I thought the flowers of the holly bush should have a feature in my project. These flowers came as a surprise to me, in their strange groupings. They looked like someone’s idea of a creature from outer space with their little stamens poking out like antennae! They are so strange, but they obviously fulfil their purpose as they produce a wonderful crop of bright red berries that greet us later in the year, looking so brave and cheerful against the dark green leaves. Have a great week, my friends. A Flower a Day #331

I believe this other-worldly looking plant is the male version of the holly flower. It might even be the Finetooth holly which likes the colder weather better than some other varieties. Certainly this bloom stretches our usual perspective on what constitutes a flower. So, for that reason alone, I love today’s choice. Thank you, Ellie, for challenging our traditional views
Other worldly it is and admittedly it does stretch our perceptions, so thanks for expressing appreciation all the same, Janet!
Thanks Ellie that is quite a unique flower. Certainly have never noticed that before but like you say you’re more taken by the red berries on the plant.. hope you have a lovely week. Big hugs to you and Steve.
It’s not surprising that we haven’t noticed it before as it’s certainly one of the least striking flowers in this project. But interesting to see. Thanks, Linda. Enjoy your week!
