Hieracium

Hawkweed, Heraklion
Hawkweed, Hieracium

This time my a Flower a Day to wish you all a wonderful day (or evening) is a photograph that I am so delighted is to be published in print as part of a collection of images taken from July to September of this year in a photographic group to which I belong. This is a member of the sunflower family, known as hawkweed – Hieracium being the official name. It’s closely related to the dandelion you can tell), chicory, prickly lettuce and sow thistle.

I am also featuring, for those who have already seen today’s photograph, an older post of mine from the days of G+. This image is of a wonderful flower, a favourite of mine, a Passiflora or Passion Flower, looking to me as if it had been designed by someone in Pixar Studios. You can see the photograph by viewing in the gallery below, and you will find the original post here. With these two beautiful flowers I am sending my warm regards to all my friends today and wishing you a weekend filled with beauty wherever you may be.

  1. Where to start with these two? Almost opposite ends of the floral spectrum, one might say. At one end, the simple and modest Hawkweed, content to play its part without competing for the limelight. Then, at the other end, the showy Passiflora, definitely a prima donna but born to it, not put on. It brings to mind a sea anemone swaying its arms in the undulating waves, confident in its beauty and born to show it off, a true masterpiece. So one, a workhorse and the other, a work of art but each contributing to the natural world according to its innate abilities and for that reason, both are loved and appreciated. Thank you, Ellie.

    1. Thank you so much for that lovely comment, once again, Janet. The contrast was almost jarring but as you say, each demonstrates the values each has at opposite ends of the spectrum.

  2. Thanks Ellie two flowers was a good shot in the arm today love the way you capture the first yellow one so I don’t know how to pronounce his name I would call it a dandelion but like you said it’s in that family. The second one the color and design is amazing thank you very much for sharing that

    1. Thanks Linda! And we it turns out I got the name wrong, so you don’t need to worry about pronouncing that! The name is actually Hieracium! Probably not much easier!
I’m glad you like my two flowers today. Enjoy your day!

  3. Hi Ellie …. a quick hello from Australia as I have had a quick look at your flowers . Now what a great collection and gorgeous and so time consuming. I do not have your patience nor the processing power to do what you are doing . But then you are not lawn bowling 4 days a week and going to the gym on 3 while there is no overseas travel … Still feel you could produce a gorgeous calendar.

    1. Thanks Len! It’s good to hear from you. As to time… They say it you want a job done give it to a busy person. I imagine i could produce a nice calendar, but no one uses printed calendars anymore! The group I belong to was to make a calendar but the printer they used in the past don’t make them anymore. So now it’s mugs, phone cases and tee shirts!
