Grass Leaved Goldentop

Grass leaved Goldentop

Again today we are back into the heat of the summer – at least in my dreams! (I hope no one finds it too hot!) 😉 To escape the heat we are going along a path to the side of the woods where we find this fascinating plant. I love the whole lifecycle of this plant, from the buds to the bright yellow flowers and the grassy leaves to these interesting clusters. Another Aster, this plant is so completely different from the usual pretty daisy-like blooms we generally associate with that family and shows the wilder side of the family, the one you find less likely to be picked by children for a bouquet. But to me it is such a wonderful reminder of the summer edge of woodlands. I hope you like it too. 😀

  1. Any day that is a WWAD is a good day. However, I think the name of this plant is Grass Leaved Goldenrod (darn that auto correct feature). This species of goldenrod is native to North America and so should be familiar to many of us who wander through meadows or see their tight clusters in the ditch at the side of the road. Definitely a reminder of the warmer and sunnier times to come…not that I’m rushing the season. However, this being groundhog day, our Wiarton Willie (local predictor of Spring) says it will be early this year. What says your Shebenacadie Sam, Ellie?

    1. Well it just shows that it’s not always autocorrect that creates these new words. The goldenrod is also called a goldentop in this particular instance, so we both have learned something new!
I think that our Shubenacadie Sam is still sheltering with the rest of our population, but as we are in the middle of a snow/rain storm, I doubt that he will even venture outside at all!
I am all in favour of rushing the season, so if you have any influence in that direction, please don’t hold back!
