Christmas Cactus

Christmas Cactus
Christmas Cactus, Schlumbergera

Today’s Flower a Day is another that I photographed in a hardware store, next to the bags of potting soil and racks of tools and supplies. Such beauty is only enhanced by the contrast with the rather grubby surrounds and when I walked into the aisle all of the building supplies disappeared for me, eclipsed by this radiance. I hope you are like me and are drawn to this bright happy flower in its drab environment. Looking for and seeing beauty wherever you are makes ugliness fade from view.

  1. Hey, a PFD. Just what I needed…and you’ve selected one of the truly amazing wonders of the plant world to feature today (yes, there are many wonders, for sure). What’s amazing is watching those tiny buds at the end of that prickly branch(?) unfold into those delicate, intricate piece of arts. It’s also made special because it flowers rarely and not for long. Talk about being a grandstander. Know your strengths and make the most of them. Thank you, Ellie.

    1. I’m so glad these PFD days are proving popular with you! I agree about the wonder of watching these tiny buds open up to such beauty. And the amazing thing is that the flower colours can change from when they are young plants to older ones. That’s another fascinating thing about them. Thanks Janet.
