Black-eyed Susan

Rudbeckia, Black-eyed Susan
Rudbeckia, Coneflower, Black-eyed Susan

Another lovely yellow bloom for you today, this time one with a beautiful Fibonacci spiral design. To see it, just zoom in (best viewed in the full image) on the sharp brown centre of the flower on the right and you will see what that looks like. (See below for more info on that.) This deceptively simple looking flower is a type of Coneflower, Rudbeckia or Black-eyed Susan. They look like little yellow suns but with that mesmerising patterning in the centres. Have a lovely sunny Sunday in your hearts if not outside your windows!

I will not attempt to explain the maths regarding the Fibonacci sequence, but for those who are interested, here is a good explanation with a fun video.

  1. Of course, it’s a coneflower! Why did I not see this before? Duh! A gregarious flower, it is a choice of many of my neighbours this year. Their gardens full of the yellow heads bobbing in the wind. But also the fields and the trails around my town are lined with these little suns which cheer you on as you pass by. As the frost hits, the petals fall off, leaving just the blackened heads to remind you, unmistakenly, that winter approaches. A bit of sun, as you say, Ellie. Thank you.

    1. This is such a friendly face of a flower, you are so right! This was actually photographed in a garden outside a store, such a cheery display in an otherwise drab environment. Thanks for the comment, Janet.

  2. I just love this flower. To see a field of them together just lifts your spirit. It certainly is an bright ray of sunshine. Thanks. Hope you have a lovely day.
